SPIE Defense, Security, and Sensing, the world’s largest unclassified event for defense, homeland security, and sensing applications, is expected to draw more than 6,000 attendees for 60 technical conferences, a complementary suite of short courses, and a 500-company exhibition in its Baltimore, Maryland, premier. Dates are 23-27 April at the Baltimore Convention Center.

Bruce Carlson, Director of the National Reconnaissance Office, will give the symposium-wide plenary talk, on transforming defense R&D to meet 21st century challenges.
Banquet speaker Paul Kaminski of Technovation, who recently won the National Reconnaissance Office Pioneer Award, will be awarded the Defense, Security and Sensing Lifetime Achievement Award. New Fellows of SPIE from the defense, security, and sensing community will also be named at the banquet.
New sessions, essential topics
The more than 2,400 technical presentations will include new sessions on compressive sensing, cyber sensing, and full-motion video workflows and technologies for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and situational awareness. Among essential topics returning to SPIE Defense, Security, and Sensing are:
- infrared sensors and systems
- defense, homeland security, and law enforcement
- CBRNE and C3I technologies
- imaging and sensing; hyperspectral imagery
- displays and 3D imaging
- sensing for industry, environment, and global health/disaster response
- emerging technologies, including energy harvesting, scanning microscopies, micro-and nanotechnology sensors
- laser sensors and systems; laser radar
- space technologies and operations
- unmanned, robotic, and layered systems.
Technical experts will lead panel discussions on:
- motion imagery
- social and cultural modeling applications for information fusion
- geospatial information fusion in activity-based intelligence analysis
- social networking innovations performance model (NIV-IPM).

Industry-focused events include:
- vendor presentations reception
- government funding panel moderated by Paul McManamon (Exciting Technology)
- early-stage technology commercialization panel moderated by Joseph Montemarano (MIRTHE, Princeton Univ.).
The three-day free-admission exhibition (25-27 April) will include large prime contractors, established suppliers, and dynamic start-ups with the latest optics, lasers, sensors, image processing, spectroscopy, infrared systems, and optoelectronics components. Among exhibiting companies are FLIR, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Lockheed Martin, Edmund Optics, L3, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon/ELCAN. More than a dozen companies are expected to host recruiters at the two-day SPIE Job Fair in the exhibition.
Over 55 short courses are being offered, on topics in infrared systems, sensing, imaging, security, laser systems, optoelectronics, and optical engineering fundamentals. Several new courses on topics such as energy harvesting, night vision, and high-dynamic-range imaging have been added this year. Professional development workshops on ITAR/international trade, product innovation, and engineering project management round out the professional development program.
Special events include a talk by Alison Flatau (Univ. of Maryland, College Park) at the Women in Optics reception, interactive poster sessions, and the symposium-wide welcome reception at the Maryland Science Center.
Programs for student and early-career professionals have been expanded, and include coaching opportunities and networking events with peers and established experts.
Conference proceedings will be published in the SPIE Digital Library in per-paper mode as soon as approved after the meeting, and also in collected print and digital volumes and collections.
