On Monday June 11th, two principals of a Reston-based design-build firm teed-off in support of the Special Olympics and Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia (DSANV) at the organizations’ 8th Annual Golf Tournament. Mark and Mina Fies, avid golfers and founders of Synergy Design and Construction, Inc., (dba Synergy D&C), have participated in tournament for the past three years.
The Special Olympics of Northern Virginia is a non-profit organization focused on helping to improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through sports. The organization’s programs and volunteers positively affect the athletes for life by helping them to develop social skills, increase their self-esteem, and learn to work as a team.
In addition to serving as treasurer for the tournament for the past three years, Mark regularly coaches athletes on the weekend to help improve their golf skills and self-confidence. “Working with our area’s athletes is one of the most rewarding experiences. The sheer joy the participants show around the game is wonderful to be around,” he says. The Fies’ have always been eager to give back to their community, and find involvement in local non-profits to be inseparable from their business plan. Mark is currently focusing on finding a way to provide custom golf clubs for the kids, and is even looking into a company-sponsored custom club-making program. “Although we receive individual golf clubs as donations, they’re typically too long and too heavy for the average athlete. Our goal is to provide at least one properly fitted club for every athlete, so they can get the maximum amount of enjoyment out of the game.”
Mina also supported the tournament by sponsoring an all-women foursome comprised of business owners and clients. “I love supporting women business owners while empowering them to feel comfortable on the course. We love shaking up the establishment and turning a few heads in the clubhouse,” said Fies.
This year’s golf tournament was held at the Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Virginia. The event included lunch, various contests, a silent auction and raffle, and an awards ceremony dinner. The tournament is always one of the largest annual fundraising efforts for the Northern Virginia Special Olympics and DSANV; this year it was a great success, raising almost $55,000.
