The Guatemalan Exporters Association- AGEXPORT - takes the first step to become a "Carbon Neutral" entity.

Recently, AGEXPORT was certified as a carbon responsible institution "their direct emissions, which are the most pollutants represent only 1% of total emissions," said Amilcar Ordoñez, General Manager of the certifying company, Green Development to Luis Godoy, AGEXPORT´s CEO, when delivering the diploma that accredits AGEXPORT as the third Carbon Responsible Guatemalan entity.

AGEXPORT is currently in the process of developing its strategy of reducing emissions, with the aim of reducing identified sources of emission and return specific processes more efficient. In addition, it is being planned to implement a community reforestation project that mitigates the carbon footprint and get to certify AGEXPORT as a Carbon Neutral entity, concluded Ivan Buitrón, AGEXPORT´s Development Division Manager, who is in charge of the Environmental Committee of the Association.

Under the methodology of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the first part of the project "Reduction of carbon footprint" was developed, according to the ISO 14064 Standard Guide. The carbon footprint is a measurement tool that allows establishing the amount of emissions of Greenhouse Gases that are released into the atmosphere by the processes done in an entity. The main benefits of the development of the study, is to have a general diagnosis of the various foci of issuance and a baseline from which, reduction and mitigation strategies can be designed to achieve carbon neutrality.

AGEXPORT is currently in the process of developing its own strategy of emissions reduction, with the aim of reducing identified sources of emission and make specific processes more efficient. In addition, a community reforestation project is being planned to mitigate the carbon footprint and get to certify AGEXPORT as a Carbon Neutral entity.
Parallel to the process, a series of workshops have been carried out to inform AGEXPORT partners, with the aim of creating a carbon responsible culture and promote good environmental practices.

This is the first step of 3 that exist, so that AGEXPORT can become a Carbon Neutral institution.
Steps to achieve the carbon neutral entity seal:
1.    Calculation of carbon footprint = carbon responsible Green Footprint label.
2.    Implementation of more efficient technology or controls that reduce sources of emission = carbon reduced Green Footprint label.
3.    Implementation of projects that capture or reduce GHG emissions, which are verified to ensure that they comply with compensation that neutralized 100% of the generated impact. = Carbon Neutral Green Footprint Seal.
