Increase in mobile internet access finds the company's developers working on mobile sites for many of its most respected clients.

Buffalo-based professional services firm Algonquin Studios has been called upon to develop mobile-friendly web sites for three of its longstanding clients in the legal, higher education, and health care fields. With internet access from mobile devices steadily chipping away at desktop browsing, mobile web design and development are becoming increasingly important to many Algonquin clients and the company’s web developers have found themselves working on more and more mobile projects.

For one of its largest legal clients, Algonquin is currently working on creating a site that closely mimics their original, with the exclusion of a stylized Flash banner that lives on the firm’s home page. Because the banner is purely decorative, there was no need to find an alternate way of presenting the banner on the mobile version of the site.

The development of a mobile site for one of the largest health care systems in Western New York is a different story. The original site also features a Flash banner but, because it contains important information the system needs to provide to all users, even those accessing the site from a mobile device, Algonquin had to find a new way to present the information. Developers replaced the Flash banner with one coded in Java Script, ensuring that visitors can see the content regardless of the browser or device they’re using to access the site.

“At Algonquin Studios, improving the usability and accessibility of our clients’ web sites has always been incredibly important to us,” says Mike Spencer, Algonquin’s Web Development Manager. “We see mobile development as an extension of our efforts to make content easier to access in more environments.”

Because CSS3 makes creating a mobile-friendly version of a client’s current web site a feasible option for cost-conscious organizations, Algonquin expects to see an increase in clients asking for mobile sites in the near future.

Algonquin has also built mobile sites for the City of Buffalo and the Buffalo Niagara Enterprise, as well as a mobile version of the company’s own marketing site for its content management system, QuantumCMS.
