Ecessa Announces New Case Study Demonstrating The ROI of Its Technology

“We had some pretty stringent requirements and expectations and Ecessa met and exceeded them all.."

That perception was not lost on Jim Meredith when he and partner Gene Peters founded ROSnet, a Software as a Service (SaaS) provider to the multi-unit restaurant industry. ROSnet aggregates data collected from existing restaurant POS systems into a resource to manage their companies and increase profits. Initially, restaurants were reluctant to sign up with ROSnet for fear their vital communications lines would be blown away.

That's why today Jim Meredith drives to his headquarters by entering a mountain and descending deep into his headquarters near Kansas City in an old limestone mine which is pretty much impenetrable.

When it came to WAN optimization, speed, redundancy and availability, Meredith made another smart decision. He chose Ecessa of Plymouth, MN, for the multi-WAN routing hardware he needed to upgrade his system.

Ecessa WAN link controllers solve the problem of reliability for Internet traffic. They provide the ability to direct Internet traffic to the best performing Internet links, for example, cable, DSL or T1. Should one link become inaccessible due to a bottleneck or outage, the WAN link controller takes that link out of service, and automatically directs network traffic to other functioning links. This process is virtually seamless to the user.

Says Meredith: “We had some pretty stringent requirements and expectations and Ecessa met and exceeded them all. Those requirements covered the areas of throughput capability, comprehensive support of DNS record types, high-availability features, security, and ease of administration. We also needed a comprehensive and well-integrated approach from the onset, rather than a license-a-piece-at-a-time approach taken by some vendors.”

After reviewing the offerings of five different vendors, and running lab trials on the solutions provided by two of these vendors, the Ecessa PowerLink appliance was the chosen solution. Not only did the PowerLink meet or exceed every listed requirement, but was also the only appliance reviewed that excelled beyond the capabilities of the previous 'ahead of its time' solution.

As ROSnet continues to grow, its reliance on Ecessa technology continues to grow as well. From the early days in Jim Meredith’s basement, starting with a single restaurant location in Winston-Salem, North Carolina – to the present day in ROSnet’s 18,000 sq. ft. underground Network Operations Center (NOC), and serving nearly 3,000 customer sites – the company has gradually upgraded from the original PowerLink 100 appliances to a high-availability configuration of Ecessa’s top-of-the-line ShieldLink 1200 Secure WAN Optimization Controllers.

Every day, thousands of restaurant managers, multi-unit managers, administrative personnel and restaurant company officers and owners rely on ROSnet for the information they need to manage their business, perform critical tasks such as sales reporting, payroll processing, effective employee scheduling and food cost control – critical to maintaining and increasing restaurant profitability, especially in difficult economic times. Additionally, an ever-growing number (60,000+) of restaurant employees access ROSnet-provided sites to check their work schedules, request time off, swap work shifts with other employees and send and receive important messages. ROSnet solutions quickly become the lifeblood of the companies they serve, which includes some of the more recognizable names in the restaurant industry – Applebee’s, IHOP, Panera Bread and Wendy’s, to name a few.

“Service reliability is critical to our company,” says Meredith adding that “throughout the years, Ecessa has consistently stepped up to the challenges that our growth has presented. The best compliment a person can give is to say that a solution just does the job and does it well, day in and day out, and that’s what I can say about every one of the PowerLink and ShieldLink appliances that we’ve used at ROSnet."

“These devices rarely need support, but in the few cases where we’ve had questions or needed advice on a specific situation, we find that Ecessa’s support personnel are experienced. They know these devices like the backs of their hands. When we make a support request today, we’re often surprised to be working with the exact same people we worked with several years ago.”

With a limestone cave as a corporate headquarters - and Ecessa Powerlinks providing failsafe communications - ROSnet and their customers find themselves quite safe from tornadoes and network interruptions.
