EQP is receiving submissions for their 2012 Pearl Bucklen Bentel Award for writers between the ages of 18 and 30.

Ecco Qua Press is now receiving submissions for the 2012 The Pearl Bucklen Bentel Award for Young Writers. Writers between the ages of 18 and 30 are encouraged to submit original written works of fiction or literary nonfiction for the chance for publication with Ecco Qua Press. The winning entry is guaranteed a publishing contract and cash payment of $500 to the author. The Pearl Bucklen Bentel Award seeks to advance young writers who undertake serious literary fiction or nonfiction, who might otherwise be shut out of mainstream publishing market. The prize is awarded to a previously unpublished work.

Pearl Bucklen Bentel, of Pittsburgh PA, enjoyed a successful career as a serial writer for the radio program Happiness Ahead in the 1940s before launching a career as a novelist of literature for teens. The first of her four novels, titled Program for Christine (1953) garnered the Junior Literary Guild award that year. Her subsequent novels include I’ll Know My Love (1955), Freshman at Large (1959) and the sequel titled Co-Ed off Campus (1965). She is most widely known as mentoring a (then) aspiring young writer named Rod Serling, creator of The Twilight Zone. Serling sold his first manuscript, a radio script, to Bentel. Following a strong career in radio and fiction writing, a lasting marriage, and two children, Pearl Bucklen Bentel died in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, in 1986.

To be eligible for the Pearl Bucklen Bentel Writing Award entrants must be a United States citizen; must be between the ages of 18 and 30; and must not have previously published a book. Submissions must be an original, previously unpublished novel or literary nonfiction, written by one person, in English, at least 30,000 words in length.

The submission deadline is May 31, 2012. Entrance fee is $25. For detailed information about how to submit visit the website at
