LED tape lights offer functionality similar to traditional LED rope light, but with a few key differences including shape and ease of installation.

1000Bulbs.com, the Internet’s largest retailer of light bulbs, ballasts, and other lighting products, has long been a popular seller of rope light. This February, the company expanded further into flexible lighting and added LED tape light to its selection. Also known as LED strip lights, the tape lights offer functionality similar to traditional LED rope light, but with a few key differences including shape and ease of installation. The new product line is comprised of nearly 50 new products spanning four categories on the 1000Bulbs.com website.
Unlike rope light, tape light is flat. The design promises to be easier to install for the nonprofessional and professional contractor alike. The unique shape makes it popular for applications including undercabinet and cove lighting, accent lighting, and mood lighting. Users can easily affix the product to surfaces using the “peel-and-stick” adhesive backing or through less permanent tracks and clips. Users may also use LED tape light in some outdoor lighting applications because it runs on 24 volts, minimizing the risk of electrical shorts and safety hazards.
1000Bulbs.com sells LED tape light in 4- and 12-inch sections as well as 16-foot spools that users can trim into shorter sections. Both the sections and spools are available in standard output, high output, and RGB color changing options. The standard solid color tape light consumes fewer than 2 watts per foot, while the high output solid color version uses just under 5 watts per foot and is more than three times brighter than the standard version. The RGB color-changing tape light is the most versatile of all the options, creating as many as 22 unique colors when used with the most sophisticated RGB controller.
Nonetheless, 1000Bulbs.com contends that the most interesting part of the product offering is price: “The real obstacle with tape light, until now, was price,” says CEO Kim Pedersen. “So to eliminate that problem, we went direct to the manufacturer.” Pedersen did not disclose the manufacturer, but assured that the tape light was of high enough quality to carry 1000Bulbs.com’s “FlexTec” brand. A standard 16-foot spool of LED tape light is currently available for as little as $60, while RGB versions sell for $120.
