The Main Street Broadband/Decatur County network continues to improve and serve more residents.

It has been a privilege for us to work with Decatur County to help solve their broadband connectivity needs

Main Street Broadband and Decatur County, Georgia are celebrating the second anniversary of their innovative partnership to provide broadband access to rural areas of the County. Launched at the end of February 2010, this public-private partnership has made Decatur County one of the most connected rural counties in Georgia, with the ultimate goal of making affordable broadband Internet access available throughout the County, which has 10,000 households spread over 600 square miles.

Situated in the southwestern corner of Georgia, along the banks of the Flint River and Lake Seminole, this picturesque County is a center of agricultural activity in the region. The very rural nature of the County had made it difficult for many residents living outside the County seat of Bainbridge to have high-speed Internet access. The partnership with Main Street Broadband has allowed the County to use special-purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) revenues to construct a wireless broadband network that reaches some of the most remote areas of the county. In combination with Main Street’s own infrastructure in Bainbridge, the combined network of ten WiMax sites is now serving approximately 1100 households and small businesses in the County. Main Street is the exclusive operator of the County’s network.

“It has been a privilege for us to work with Decatur County to help solve their broadband connectivity needs,” said Mike Mies, Co-Founder and CEO of Main Street Broadband. “We created our company to bring affordable broadband services to underserved areas in the Southeast. We are currently working with the County to expand the network to cover even more households. We salute the County commissioners and voters for having had the strategic vision to approve a telecom SPLOST to meet the needs of the County’s rural residents.”

The use of County SPLOST revenues, as well as tower infrastructure owned by the County and the cities of Bainbridge, Attapulgus and Climax, makes it commercially feasible to serve very rural areas of the County. Demand for Internet connectivity in these areas has led Main Street to recently make significant upgrades to the capacity of the network.

The Decatur County network is integrated with Main Street Broadband’s other network infrastructure in Southwest Georgia. Main Street currently provides service to the cities of Blakely, Colquitt and Donalsonville and other rural areas of Early, Miller and Seminole Counties. In order to provide effective redundancy, the Decatur County network has also recently been integrated with Main Street’s network in Northwest Florida.
