Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil acknowledges this can be a good way to meet business prospects, to network, or make a deal - but it can also be beneficial in meeting a mate. Or at least getting a date! "I've had several patients who've met on an airplane and ended up getting married. I've also known people who've gotten a job out of an airplane connection!" Sure, this can happen by random chance, but it often seems that the odds of meeting someone interesting on an airplane don't work out very often. This development lets ticket-holders attempt to change these odds.

"Instead of doing a deal on the golf course, or meeting someone at a bar," says Dr. Bonnie, "your next flight could be a what tips the scales." In order successfully pick a seat mate, Dr. Bonnie suggests employing Smart Heart Skills and Dialogue. She often recommends this for couples who are testing their compatibility and want to learn more about their partner, but it works for strangers too. This can be the "glue when the relationship is new," as it helps with fact-finding and developing a rapport with someone.

"It's helpful to ask pointed but open-ended questions in order to determine how compatible someone might be - either in business or in personal relationships," suggests Dr. Bonnie. A cross-country flight can be enough time to determine if a seatmate could be a potential mate. And if the conversation heads in a less promising direction, Smart Heart Skills can help there as well. Dr. Bonnie instructs people to announce a disconnection or a reconnection: "The person can indicate that they have work to do before they land. Or - if it's a conversation they'd like to continue, they can make an appointment to reconnect by saying they'd love to continue the conversation once they arrive."

The friendly skies just got a lot friendlier!
