DWI is a unique area of criminal defense... I'm happy to belong to an organization that helps its members improve the skills needed to defend people charged with DWI.

Raleigh criminal lawyer Damon Chetson announced today that he has been accepted as a member of the National College of DUI Defense, a leading organization for lawyers who focus in DWI or drunk driving defense work in the United States.

Each year thousands of people are arrested in North Carolina for driving while impaired. The defense of these cases requires lawyers who are trained in the specifics of DWI law, including how to recognize when police have made mistakes during their investigations.

"I'm excited to be a member of the NCDD," said Raleigh criminal lawyer Damon Chetson. "The college's mission is to help promote public welfare by providing a high level of training in DWI defense law."

Mr. Chetson's membership in the NCDD comes at a time when North Carolina has dramatically increased the possible punishments associated with a DWI.

A person convicted of a DWI in North Carolina can now receive up to $10,000 in fines and three years in prison.

Even people who are convicted of less serious Driving While Impaired charges face considerable consequences, including the automatic suspension of a driver's license, fines, community service or possible jail time, and the requirement to complete substance abuse treatment.

"Everyone knows drunk driving is wrong," said Mr. Chetson. "But it is also wrong for someone to be convicted based on inadequate evidence or poor DWI investigation techniques."

"DWI is a unique area of criminal defense, which is why I'm happy to belong to an organization that helps its members improve the skills needed to defend people charged with DWI," said Raleigh criminal lawyer Chetson.
