U.S. Businessman Meets with Janus Corporate Solutions to Discuss the Relocation of his Business and Family to Singapore

A letter written by an American small business owner detailing the United States' lack of support for business continues to generate a great deal of interest on the Internet. This week American engineer Michael Crowley met with Janus Corporate Solutions to discuss relocating his business to Singapore, where the corporate income tax scheme is highly favourable to entrepreneurs and corporations.

We look forward to continuing the process with Mr. Crowley, and to offering him support and guidance for the possible relocation of his business to Singapore.

As of 2010, the United Nations determined that more than 200 million people were living outside their home countries, a number that included economic migrants. Today, relocation to Singapore and other countries is on the rise for businesses and individuals. This week, Janus Corporate Solutions met with American businessman Michael Crowley to assist him as he explores the possibilities of life in Singapore.

Putting aside the increasing number of expatriates for a moment, the trends in the motivation for relocating to a country like Singapore are particularly interesting. Before the end of the 20th century, a fair number of expatriates relocated because their employers required them to move to another country to perform their jobs. Today private motivation is becoming a more significant factor than corporate assignment in the decision to leave one’s home country.

This week the Janus Corporate Solutions team met with American businessman Michael Crowley, who had recently written an open letter about his concerns about the economic future of his home country and the heavy tax burden placed on small and growing businesses in the US. A Professional Engineer (PE), Crowley owned a firm that performed municipal and commercial development work when the US economic crisis came to a head in 2008.

After shuttering his small business in the wake of the economic downturn, Crowley returned to the work force and placed his own business on hold. Now that the global economy is beginning to rebound, Crowley is inching toward re-establishing his business, and now believes he may very well need to leave the US and rebuild in another country where businesses aren’t as heavily taxed, regulated and in many ways held back by their government. The possibility of creating a new company based in Singapore holds a great deal of interest and promise for Crowley.

In Crowley’s letter he expressed to his former employees his lack of confidence that the economic environment in the US would ever improve. “Unfortunately, the regulatory climate in this country (US) simply isn’t conducive to anyone starting or growing a business,” Crowley wrote.

Following his meeting with Janus, Crowley is even more eager to explore a future for his family and his business in Singapore. Next steps include figuring out precisely how the engineering services he provides will fit into the Singapore business environment. “We look forward to continuing the process with Mr. Crowley, and hope that we will be able to offer him support, information and guidance for the possible relocation of his business to Singapore,” said Jacqueline Low, Director of Janus Corporate Solutions.

Crowley’s professional credo is “we learn, we earn and we return”. He expects his current journey to take him to a place like Singapore, where he and his family will feel at home, and he will be able to fully practice his manifesto as both a professional and an individual.
