Field Fresh Apps® Launches First iPhone Mobile Application Dedicated to Reducing Obesity by Teaching the Benefits of Organic Food and Farming

Field Fresh Apps®, a developer of mobile applications focused on enhancing users’ lifestyles through the availability of nutrition information, gaming and social connectivity, today announced the launch of a new iPhone mobile application called MY FOOD FIGHT!®. The app, which can be downloaded for free via the Apple iTunes store and at the Field Fresh Apps® website, is the first mobile application of its kind to use innovative gamification to fight obesity by teaching people about the benefits of organic food and farming. Field Fresh Apps® has partnered with The Organic Center to provide players with access to information about the benefits that organic food and farming brings to our health and the environment.

“The MY FOOD FIGHT!® app is designed to be a fun, interactive tool for people to learn about the benefits of organic nutrition, in addition to tips on how to live a more sustainable lifestyle,” said Eric Quick, founder and chief executive officer of Field Fresh Apps®. “This app comes at a critical time as consumers are increasingly exposed to unhealthy food messages, which are contributing to our country’s growing obesity epidemic. Our hope is to counteract those negative messages with an entertaining and educational tool that rewards positive, healthy food choices and behaviors both in and outside of the game.”

The MY FOOD FIGHT!® app is built on a “Play, Learn, Share & Reward” platform where players “play” the game by making healthy food choices, which accumulates into energy points that extend each player’s stamina and duration of game play. For example, organic food consumption earns higher points and more energy than conventional food, and high nutrient foods (e.g. super foods like kale and broccoli), are more valuable than low nutrient dense foods like potatoes. The points and energy are based off of The Organic Center’s Nutritional Quality Index (TOC-NQI). Alternatively, when players eat unhealthy foods or those that contain genetically modified ingredients, or GMOs, they quickly lose energy and can even lose their virtual life, especially if too many GMOs are consumed. In addition to being rewarded for healthy food choices, players can also purchase nutrient nuggets, which serve as the game’s currency. The nuggets start at $0.99 and are similar to vitamins in that they provide supplemental energy, expanded functionality and help reinforce the energy received from healthy food consumption.

In conjunction with The Organic Center, players can also “learn” about the benefits of organic food and farming via the “learn” section within the app, which includes links to The Organic Center’s Shopper's Pocket Guide and its monthly newsletter, The Organic Scoop. They can then “share” their progress and invite others to play via Facebook or email, and are positively “rewarded” when they self-report additional healthy behaviors, which include eating nutritional foods and exercising outside of the game.

While the app is free to download, each subsequent nutrient nugget purchase will trigger a donation to The Organic Center to help further its mission. The Organic Center will initially receive five percent of the game’s revenue, up until revenue hits $100,000. Once the game has generated $100,000, The Organic Center will receive 3 percent of revenue thereafter.

The MY FOOD FIGHT!® app comes at a time when health and fitness mobile apps are becoming increasingly popular. According to ABI Research, by 2016, consumers will have downloaded over 1 billion health and fitness apps, with in-app game revenue expected to hit $4.6 billion. Meanwhile, overall gaming revenue should exceed $16 billion.

“We are honored to be a part of such an important yet fun project,” said Joan Boykin, executive director for The Organic Center. “It is our hope that this app will counteract the millions of unhealthy food messages that society is bombarded with and supplement them with messages of good health and nutrition that are inherent to organic food and farming.”

The MY FOOD FIGHT!® app was developed by co-founders, Eric Quick and Roger Cardoza, who have each been in the food service industry for almost two decades. Both founders chose to come together to develop the app because of their concern with the unhealthy state of our food supply, particularly given the plethora of toxic ingredients that have permeated today’s most common foods. These include preservatives, artificial colors and flavors, growth hormones and genetically engineered ingredients.

Quick’s background stems from his extensive experience in operations management in foodservice, retail, e-commerce and food manufacturing, including senior leadership positions with Disney, Safeway & Sodexo. Cardoza’s foodservice experience extends from operations and financial management to food manufacturing and information systems. He was previously the director of operations for Revolution Foods Colorado and a senior financial analyst for Vail Resorts, Inc., supporting the Vail and Beaver Creek Mountain dining and private club operations.

Quick and Cardoza will be available to demo the MY FOOD FIGHT!® app at Natural Products Expo West, March 8-11 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim Calif. Quick and Cardoza will be present at The Organic Center’s booth (#5907) during the show.
