Publishers and Independent App Developers Now Able to Integrate Real-Time, Hyper-Local Weather Conditions and Forecasts Directly into iPhone and Other iOS Apps

Weather industry leader Weather Decision Technologies® (WDT) today announced a partnership with Verious, the leader in connecting developers with mission-critical components and services for mobile app development. Together, the companies are launching a line of API components for mobile app publishers to seamlessly integrate real-time weather feeds into apps for smartphones, tablets and other connected devices.

“Our industry-leading iMap® Weather Radio and RadarScope apps have been very successful as standalone product offerings on the App Store and Android Market,” said Mike Eilts, CEO of Weather Decision Technologies. “Today, through our partnership with Verious, we are now able to offer an ‘app service’ that allows other publishers to embed a mini version of our functionality directly into their premium apps, providing up-to-date local weather data to end users in the context and app that is most relevant to them.”

To kick off their partnership, WDT and Verious today introduced a Weather API component for iOS—a “mini-app” for current weather conditions and forecasts that can be embedded into other mobile apps tailored for the iPhone and iPod Touch. These sophisticated software modules handle all of the real-time calls, back-end content parsing, data presentation and caching necessary to integrate real-time weather data feeds into a native mobile app. Each component contains thousands of lines of complex code representing significant development cost savings to app publishers and developers. The Weather API component utilizes the Verious™ License Manager to enable various licensing models including a free 30-day trial, an enterprise/source code version, and an ad-supported version.

“Web publishers of all sizes have long been able to integrate weather conditions and forecasts into their Web sites but injecting weather data into a native mobile app has been a daunting task, until now,” said Anil Pereira, Founder and CEO of Verious. “Our new Weather API component makes it easy for large publishers and independent developers alike to integrate real-time, hyper-local weather info into their apps. User engagement and loyalty dramatically increases through an integrated, ‘in-app’ experience and localized targeting drives significantly higher than average CPMs for publishers to monetize their existing audience through increased mobile page views.”

How it Works
The Weather API component is location-aware and consists of a small weather bar that displays current conditions (sun, rain, clouds, etc.), temperature, and city name (e.g., San Carlos, CA) at a user’s current location. When a user ‘taps’ the weather bar, the component opens a full-screen weather page which mimics a standalone mobile weather app but is actually a component integrated directly into the host app. This page highlights current location (and the ability to change it); current temperature (in either F or C); “feels like” temperature; wind speed and direction; and a five-day forecast view (including highs and lows). The component comes in a licensable “enterprise” version for larger media publishers or a free version for independent developers who wish to add weather news and forecasts into their mobile apps. Pricing for the enterprise version is based on volume. The free version is subsidized by hyper-local ads that are displayed in the full-screen weather page.

The Weather API Component is available now on http://www.Verious.com . Mobile developers are able to download a free trial version so they can immediately test real-time weather news and forecasts in the XCode development environment (for iOS apps). Components for Android and other popular mobile platforms—as well as many other types of weather views and feeds (radar, satellite, hurricane alerts, golf or ski weather)—will be rolled out beginning in Q2 of this year.
