Novus Medical Detox Center Wages Aggressive Battle Against Recent Prescription Drug Abuse

Florida-based treatment program tackles explosive rise in addiction to legally prescribed drugs.

Novus sets itself apart from other drug and alcohol treatment centers by offering premium services that put the patient's safety, wellbeing and dignity first.

Many states nationwide are wrestling with the shocking reality that death from prescription drug overdose is surpassing death from street drugs. In fact, in Florida alone, an average of nearly eight people die every day from their addiction to or misuse of prescription drugs -- medications legally prescribed by doctors and other healthcare practitioners, and numbers are continuing to grow. Today, prescription pill addiction is officially an epidemic. Novus Medical Detox Center is fighting back with a medical detox solution unlike any other.

Reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention demonstrate the extreme seriousness of the problem. Nearly 17,000 people in Florida died from prescription drug overdose between 2003 and 2009. While the situation is not so sunny in the Sunshine State, there's a break in the clouds, thanks to Novus. “Our detox approach is proven to release patients from the grip of addiction while empowering them through a restorative process that supports the whole person -- body, mind and spirit," said Kirk Burness, Director of Novus.

Located in a peaceful, secure setting in Florida's Tampa Bay region, Novus sets itself apart from other drug and alcohol treatment centers by offering premium services that put the patient's safety, wellbeing and dignity first. Unlike many detox facilities, Novus pays particular attention to strengthening its patient’s bodies, so the detox process is as painless as possible. While "getting clean" is the primary goal, patients say they experience newfound respect and care for their total health, making them physically, emotionally and mentally stronger. They are then more capable of completing successful rehab programs, returning home and getting back to normal lives.

"Novus was created out of a genuine desire and need to treat detox patients as real people who have genuine potential and worth in our world," Burness explains. "We serve healthful food and employ incredible staff and healthcare professionals. Novus also uses a customized regimen of supplements, minerals, vitamins and hydration that powerfully nourishes and facilitates the detox process. All this and more occurs in a setting that's soothing, safe and private. We work to ensure that our patients ultimately feel revived and confident in their ability not only to survive but to thrive. They're better equipped to trust themselves as they move on to the next step in life."

Because Novus is proven to be a more effective detox solution than most alternatives available to patients today, the center has set its sights on expanding. Twenty more beds will be added in the next year as Novus plans to double its admission numbers to meet the explosive demand. Just last year, 69 percent of Novus patients were in detox for prescription drug addiction alone, and only 19 percent there for illicit drug abuse. Considering that legislation has just begun to address the epidemic, Novus is not projecting a drop in the population of prescription drug abusers anytime soon.

The 'war on drugs' seems to be never-ending in this country, yet this escalation of prescription medicine, which is right in Novus’ backyard and directly related to rampant prescribing of legal addictive drugs, is a serious setback that no one could have seen coming, Burness went on to say. “But that doesn't mean we can't fight this particular battle, and Novus will continue to do what it can to win. We've got the talent, resources, strategies and techniques that are critical for patient success, and that's why patients leave here genuinely healthier and hopeful, as opposed to distrustful and in despair.”
