The Garage Project, Which Offers Electric Cars Plug-In Charging Stations, Earned LEED® GOLD Certification By The U.S. Green Building Council.

West Palm Beach, Florida: Suffolk Construction built the 240,000-square-foot parking garage, which has spaces for 763 cars, slots for 35 motorcycles, and accommodations for 80 bicycles. This project was originally designated to reach LEED-CS (Core & Shell) and has many sustainable features including an underground retention vault and cistern which is used to store and treat storm water runoff from the site. A portion of the irrigation system is fed by the runoff water. Materials used on the interiors actually surpassed the LEED requirements for off-gassings of VOC’s and other toxic chemicals. LED lighting and an energy management system that provides artificial light specifically where it is needed also aids in the reduction of energy consumption. A unique aspect to this project is the solar carport that is located on the roof level; while plug-ins charging stations for electric vehicles are provided on the first floor.

The project was designed and built for the City of Sarasota by the award-winning architecture firm, Jonathan Parks Architect. The environmentally-responsible design also satisfies the functional, strategic, and aesthetic needs of the City.

The garage is located one block from Sarasota Bay, so the natural contours of the exterior were designed to resemble the wind-filled sails of a ship. Expressly relating to the programmatic and visual requirements of the new parking garage, the “sails” are designed to let natural light and ventilation into all parking levels while screening the vehicles from public view.
