The company will challenge the RFID community to come up with ideas for how to utilize the technology to create a positive impact on social causes.

Xtreme RFID, a Cascade Engineering company, is collaborating with RFID Journal to launch its Xtreme Project—a contest with a cause—at RFID Journal LIVE! 2012, being held on Apr. 3-5, in Orlando, Fla. The project will challenge RFID experts, engineers, technicians and activists to come up with new ways to utilize radio frequency identification technologies to positively impact popular social causes.

The Xtreme Project will illustrate that RFID is not only a great technology used for tracking assets and improving efficiencies, but can also track real and lasting changes in the social-cause arena. Examples of impactful ways in which RFID is currently being utilized to enhance social movements include monitoring levels of clean drinking water within developing countries, tracking the delivery of AIDS medications to impoverished areas and scanning the amount of litter removed from a river or public park.

Participation in the Xtreme Project contest is free, and entries can be submitted at http://www.xtremerfid.com through Mar. 28, 2012. Xtreme RFID will review all entries and select the top three. The company's booth at LIVE! 2012 will be a hub for exploring the power and future of RFID technology. The top ideas submitted will be displayed at that booth, and all LIVE! attendees are invited to stop by for a firsthand look at these submissions, and to cast their vote for their favorite cause.

The three main criteria are as follows: Ideas must address a social cause, utilize RFID as part of the solution and not have been implemented prior to the start of the contest. Entrants are encouraged to show off their creativity, compassion and cool technology. Winners will be selected based on which idea meeting the main criteria is believed to provide the greatest positive impact on a social issue.

Two prizes will be awarded. First, all voters will be entered into a voter-appreciation drawing for an Apple iPad. In addition, the winning submitter will receive $5,000 worth of consulting time and/or hardware toward making his or her idea a reality. Both winners will be announced at LIVE! at 3:00 PM on Apr. 5, and will also be posted at http://www.xtremerfid.com. The contest is open to everyone except for employees of RFID Journal and Xtreme RFID,as well as their family members. For more information, visit http://www.xtremerfid.com.
