Wellington, New Zealand (PRWEB) March 08, 2012
The “Moodle as Issuer, Mahara” as Displayer project will integrate Mozilla’s new free and open source “Open Badges” software to issue, manage and display digital badges for learning across the Web. All the new software will be released as open source to Moodle, the world’s leading open source learning management system, and Mahara is the leading open source eportfolio system widely used in K12 and higher education.
The Open Badges functionality will also be integrated into TotaraLMS, the corporate distribution of Moodle, designed to reduce an enterprise's learning management costs significantly whilst providing some of the most advanced learning management functionality.
Richard Wyles, CEO of Totara said, “We’re very excited to be undertaking this project as it aligns so well with our open source ethos and goals to deliver core infrastructure for the demands of 21st century learning. Schools, not-for-profits, higher education, workplace and corporate training – all areas of learning can benefit from this initiative. We see this project as transformative and that is our mission. ”
About Open Badges
Learning today happens everywhere but it's often difficult to get recognition for skills and achievements gained outside of formal education and training contexts. Mozilla's Open Badges project is working to solve that problem, making it easy for any organization or learning community to issue, earn and display badges across the web. The result: recognizing 21st century skills, unlocking career and educational opportunities, and helping learners everywhere level up in their life and work.
The Badges for Lifelong Learning Competition brought together Web developers, designers and technologists with educators, online learning innovators and collaborators that range from NASA, the U.S. Department of Education and the Girl Scouts of America to Intel, Disney-Pixar, Motorola and Totara Learning Solutions.
The goal: explore how digital badges can provide learners of all ages new ways to gain 21st century skills, harness the full educational power of the Internet, and unlock career and learning opportunities in the real world.
