Bears in Brooklyn? Cal Bears and Top Universities Immerse Brooklyn Elementary School Students in the College Experience

March 13, 2012, Brooklyn, New York – Today, Bensonhurst elementary school P.S. 247 announced that the University of California, Berkeley, has joined its College Partnership Program™. This addition makes a total of 22 city, state and national colleges and universities involved with the school’s commitment to make college a part of its students’ education continuum. UC Berkeley has been partnered with a 4th grade classroom and has plans for a Skype chat to take place with staff and students, and hopes to visit the classroom in-person when the UC Berkeley students who hail from Brooklyn are home for vacations. UC Berkeley’s banners will join those of the other colleges to adorn the school and their partner classroom, making a statement that this is The New York City College Partnership Elementary School, a name assigned to P.S. 247 by the Chancellor of New York City Schools nearly four years ago when the College Partnership Program began.

“We are thrilled to have UC Berkeley join our school community and the team of impressive universities that are helping P.S. 247 fulfill our commitment to prepare our students for college and life,” said Christopher Ogno, P.S. 247’s Principal. “It is our school’s priority to provide an atmosphere year-round that helps children and their families understand the opportunities that are available to them in our society. While our school has achieved academic success, we are dedicated to ensure that our students have a direction and prepare to be college bound.”

“We are happy to partner with P.S. 247 to introduce UC Berkeley to future Cal Bears,” says La Dawn Duvall, executive director of visitor and parent services at UC Berkeley. “This is a great opportunity to partner with one of New York City’s top performing schools and support children who are in a learning environment that actively promotes higher education.”

Each of the school’s 30 classrooms has been matched with a partnering college, most of which have members of their faculty, staff or student body visit their partner classroom each semester to engage students in educational activities or share personal experiences with them to provide a connection to the college experience. There is also a Parent College Resource Center that provides access to information about college admissions practices, programs offered at the colleges and information concerning financial aid. Every P.S. 247 student, from kindergarten through 5th grade, has had the opportunity to take a field trip to a different one of the local colleges for a campus tour each year of the program.

In addition, the entire school community has been educated about college opportunities for their children and families through annual school-wide events, such as the unique PS 247 Parents College Orientation.

Including UC Berkeley, the 22 participating colleges are: Adelphi University; Brooklyn College; The City College of New York; Columbia University; The Cooper Union; Farmingdale State College; Fashion Institute of Technology; Hofstra University; Hunter College; Iona College; Kingsborough Community College; New York University; Niagara County Community College; The Old Westbury College, State University of New York; Purchase College, State University of New York; Queens College, City University of New York; St. John’s University; St. Joseph’s College; SUNY College at Oneonta; University of Connecticut; and New York City Wagner College.

The program was developed by PS 247’s principal Christopher Ogno in collaboration with Ivy Cohen Corporate Communications, which has been partnered with the school as its corporate sponsor through the nonprofit organization PENCIL since 2006. PENCIL creates long-term partnerships between business leaders and principals to help develop innovative solutions to the challenges facing New York City public schools.
