Artificial turf provides an ideal food source for mold spores, especially the organic materials that collect in the hollows and on the stems of the turf and we’ve seen orders rise in cities where humidity is elevated

While homeowners are increasingly turning to realistic-looking and feeling artificial turf that eliminates the use of water and fertilizers, they’re finding they now have a new challenge; eliminating the mold that tends to grow on the surface of the grass blades.
In the past, homeowners had to use harsh chemicals to eliminate the mold that can form on the turf. But these days, more and more people who have installed artificial turf are relying on MoldOff, a biodegradable product which can solve their mold problem without harm to the environment.
“Artificial turf provides an ideal food source for mold spores, especially the organic materials that collect in the hollows and on the stems of the turf and we’ve seen orders rise in cities where humidity is elevated,” explains Chuck Davis, a representative of Grawood Enterprises, maker of MoldOff.
The problem is that blades of artificial turf are held upright by a silicon sand base which traps moisture. Combining this trapped moisture with shade that grass provides creates an ideal environment for mold growth. Once the mold establishes itself in the sand, it climbs the grass blades. The roots penetrate into the blades and the mold feeds on the plastic. Unless this situation is addressed immediately, the mold problem will spread and become more difficult to control.
Having discovered MoldOff, homeowners are now able to remove mold from artificial turf quickly and easily. Wearing safety masks to protect against the mold spores, they start by brushing off as much growth as possible with a broom. Once the loose surface mold is removed, they spray MoldOff on the affected surface and let it stand in the sun for 24 hours. If necessary, they repeat that process. Many people are now scheduling this treatment every six months to prevent reoccurrence.
“Homeowners have had such success with MoldOff on their backyard putting greens that we just sent a case of samples to the new Reef Palms golf course in Australia!” jokes Davis, referring to the world's first 18-hole synthetic golf course which features fully synthetic greens, surrounds and synthetic tee boxes.
Luckily, most artificial turf jobs are not this massive and can be easily treated with MoldOff. For those who have artificial turf on their putting greens, residential yards or commercial properties, MoldOff is the best eco-friendly option for pre-treating and preventing dangerous mold from forming.
