Few can forget the scenes the last time Justin Bieber appeared on the Today show, with thousands of adoring fans hoping to catch a glimpse of the teen idol. And it would appear that UK boy band One Direction are about to repeat those scenes come Monday.
With numerous sold out concerts, fans complaining about missing out on tickets, and scalpers selling tickets at huge prices on eBay, it's clear that the fab five from the UK have truly blasted off into orbit and are here to stay.
Fans have been online enforce on social networks and forums discussing the best time to get to the plaza to get a good position, and a chance to see the teen sensations perform live up close.
One Direction mania had already hit the internet and mobile devices in a big way. Their single, What Makes You Beautiful, entered the US chart last week with 132,000 downloads, the highest by a UK band in almost 14 years.
Interestingly, according to Google's keyword tool, which tells you how many people are searching each month for a particular keyword, 3.35 million people are searching for One Direction related search phrases each month.
To put that into context, that is as many searches as Westlife and Bryan Adams combined and almost double the number of searches that the popular Kings of Leon band gets.
One Direction fans have also been very active socially with the band having over 3 million facebook followers, over 2 million twitter followers and several great apps have been released by various fans to support One Direction on Apple's app store, and on the Android store also.
One of these fan apps in particular, called One Direction by Affiliate Concepts Ltd, managed to catch this wave of One Direction fever and rocketed up the rankings in the entertainment category of Apple's AppStore almost overnight.
This app is particularly popular because it contains a comprehensive mash up of daily information on One Direction including live news feeds, videos, twitter posts, photos, tour dates and the ability for fans to comment on news items and interact socially from within the app.
Another fan has released an app that allows you to simulate getting your own photo taken with the band.
All of this has helped 1D to achieve enormous word of mouth popularity growth in a very short space of time. Last month one of their gigs sold an incredible 300 thousand tickets in one morning. Fans queued for up to 40 hours to part with their hard earned money for those tickets. Expect to see the same tomorrow.
