Here in the U.S., we have just begun to understand the potential of seabuckthorn and it is our objective to encourage more research, education, and communication in the coming years.

Organizers of the United States Seabuckthorn Association (USSA) announced today the launch of the new, not-for-profit industry group. The announcement was made at Natural Products Expo West, the premier trade show for the $68 billion organic and natural products industry being held in Anaheim, CA.

The purpose for the USSA is the scientific, commercial, and educational advancement of the seabuckthorn berry in the United States, and to complement similar efforts being undertaken internationally since the 1999 formation of the International Seabuckthorn Association (ISA) out of Beijing, China. The initial efforts of the USSA will be to develop a network of professionals with an interest in studying, promoting and developing scientific and commercial cooperation for the heralded fruit. The goals include introducing the berry’s numerous health, beauty and wellness benefits plus communicating how the sustainable shrub with a substantial root system could help protect high-risk areas from potentially dangerous mudslides, wildfires and ground erosion.

Seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) has been used for thousands of years in eastern civilizations and grows wild throughout several higher elevation areas. The hardy fruit produced from the thorny plant is loaded with over 190 bio-active nutrients including vitamins, essential fatty acids and the most potent food-based natural supply of Omega 7.

One of the original founders of the USSA; Bruce McMullin, Founder/CEO of Sibu Beauty, is considered the vanguard for introducing seabuckthorn to the United States. When asked about the future of the touted “miracle berry”, McMullin explained: “Here in the U.S., we have just begun to understand the potential of seabuckthorn and it is our objective to encourage more research, education, and communication in the coming years."

Other founders include the well-regarded dental and oral health professional, Dr. Gerry Curatola who has featured seabuckthorn’s numerous attributes during appearances on The Dr. Oz Show; and Dr. Steve Ault, Regional Advisor on Neglected Infectious Diseases.

The USSA inaugural year will include several teleconferences for members, designed to share knowledge and encourage research and cooperation. The USSA is making plans to host a conference and meeting beginning in 2013.

Potential members are invited to visit Sibu Beauty Booth #3611 March 9-11 at Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim or by contacting Bruce McMullin at: bmcmullin(at)sibu(dot)com
