We proved that the self-drive 3.5 tonne truck mount model was what many contractors had been desperately wanting.

Powered access provider Smart Platforms Rentals marks its tenth anniversary of hiring self-drive truck mounted cherry pickers with the recent opening of its third depot in Manchester. The 6,700 sq ft facility is located in Trafford Park which is only 4 minutes from the M60 Manchester Orbital and 15 minutes from the M6; offering easy access to Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cheshire as well as trans Pennine routes. It also expands the existing Smart network; the Sutton Coldfield branch serving the Midlands and Hemel Hempstead depot supplying the south east.

The depot was conceived in response to the growing demand by a large proportion of Smart’s client base that needed a wider national coverage. The branch runs a fleet of truck, van, 4x4 and tracked access platforms; the fleet mix was developed in consultation with customer and prospect requirements. ‘We pride ourselves on having a wide choice of platforms, a very low average platform age and a very high model consistency’, stated Guy Willett; Smart’s Commercial Director.

Smart pioneered the hire of self drive truck mounted aerial platforms in the UK with clients appreciating the benefits of being able to work at height on their terms. ‘We proved that the self-drive 3.5 tonne truck mount model was what many contractors had been desperately wanting. Hitting multiple sites on the one hire, spot hiring sometimes just for a day, being able to drive on a standard car licence and not having to pay the high delivery/collection costs for self-propelled kit or the relatively expensive rates for an operated truck mount made perfect sense to them’ said Willett.

The depot opening also coincides with the thousandth candidate to have received IPAF training from Smart. ‘Training has proven to be an extremely successful additional service that we offer. Particularly considering we’ve reached this milestone after only offering it directly in the last two years’ commented Willett. ‘As with all of our sites the Manchester Orbital branch can offer IPAF training on self-propelled boom and scissor lifts as well as our vehicle mounts. We even offer PASMA accredited portable tower training for clients who don’t even use powered access. So if you work at height then we’re confident we can help you’ added Willett.
