It suggests that while vitamin D deficiency is very prevalent in older populations there is still no real strategy in place to treat the issue at hand.

Bel Marra Health, well known for offering high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, supports a recent study that explains the tie between vitamin D deficiency and the mortality of elderly women in nursing homes.

The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism study has called it “an inverse association of vitamin D deficiency and mortality”.

Information within the study says recommendations for vitamin D intake in the elderly are considerably higher than any other age group due to vitamin D lacking so much certain demographics of the population. This information also falls in line with the idea that vitamin D deficiency is considered a major risk factor for skeletal diseases.

Dr. Stefan Pilz, MD, of the Medical University of Graz, Austria was quoted as saying "Our findings show that the vast majority of nursing home residents are severely vitamin D deficient and those with the lowest vitamin D levels are at high risk of mortality”.

In this study, researchers examined a sample of 961 nursing home residents in Austria, with an average age of 83.7 years. 284 deaths were recorded and vitamin D levels were below recommended levels in 92.8 percent of the study participants.

Dr. Victor Marchione, Pulmonary Medicine expert, and spokesperson for Bel Marra Health says this information is appalling, “it suggests that while vitamin D deficiency is very prevalent in older populations there is still no real strategy in place to treat the issue at hand”.
