In its April, 2012 issue B&W+Color magazine has announced the winners of its annual Single Image Contest for photography, and five members of Artspan have taken awards: Stephen Bitel (East Norwich, NY), Allan R. Lamb (Yuba City, CA), Milicska Jalbert (Montreal, Quebec), Mary Phipps-Seward (Conshohocken, PA), Haydee Yordan (San Juan, Puerto Rico). Artspan (http://www.artspan.com), a major contemporary art community serving both artists and buyers, is the leading U.S.-based provider of template-based websites for artists and artisans.
“The strong showing of our membership in this contest demonstrates the amazing depth and variation of talent represented on Artspan.” says Artspan Founder and Director Eric Sparre. “Artspan has always attracted top professional artists, and we have an especially impressive selection of photographers.”
About the Winners
Stephen Bitel (photographybybitel.artspan.com) is the winner of a Gold Award in Architecture/Interiors; and three Merit Awards, in Photojournalism Documentary, Metaphor/Abstract, and Travel/People/Places. Stephen’s photographic work has covered a wide range of subjects, including advertising and photojournalism, but he takes particular interest in using lighting and composition to transform the abstracted colors, textures, and reflections of everyday elements.
Milicska Jalbert (http://www.milicskajalbert.com) is a winner of a Merit Award in Landscape/Nature. Intuitive and spontaneous, Milicska allows herself to be guided by the spirit of the moment with her photography. She has a special penchant for nature: “The beauty of its games of light, the geometry of its forms, and the music of its colors provide inexhaustible sources of inspiration.”
Allan R. Lamb (rustnscapes.artspan.com/) is the winner of a Silver Award for Still Life/Objects; and three Merit Awards, in Landscape/Nature, Digital Manipulation, and Nudes/Body. He has been a photographer for over 45 years and has travelled throughout Europe, United States Dominican Republic, Panama, and Korea. He has actively studied historic photographic processes and cameras in Europe and the United States, and has written articles on photography published here and in Europe for the book Framing Photography, now in its fourth edition.
Mary Phipps-Seward (maryphipps-seward.artspan.com/) is a winner of a merit award in Digital Manipulation. Mary, graduate of Moore College of Art and Design, describes her work as having “a very graphic "Stop! Look at me!" quality. I speak out with vibrant, saturated color in an effort to bring attention and appreciation to "everyday" visual delights.”
Haydee Yordan (haydeeyordan.artspan.com/) is the winner of a Silver Award for Metaphor/Abstract. In Haydee’s words, “I look inquisitively into uncommon spaces to discover the art of nature that we sometimes don't see, like the magic of sand formations, the dance of water in the seashore, water reflections and details of tree bark. I feel a need to go into the intimacy of nature with the objective of showing you valuable discoveries.”
All of these photographers have their own customized, ecommerce enabled websites on the Artspan platform. Although Artspan member websites are stand-alone, multi-faceted entities, they gain exposure through connection to the central directories and portals of the Artspan.com home site, a major contemporary art destination. No other online artist community offers this “best of both worlds” approach.
Founded in 1999 by painter and entrepreneur Eric Sparre, Artspan.com is a major contemporary art destination connecting producers and consumers of contemporary art , featuring close to 4,000 artist and artisan websites in many different categories, including painting, photography, jewelry, and sculpture. Artspan members include artists from around the country and the world. Artspan.com is consistently top-ranked for the term Contemporary Art by Google and Yahoo. Artspan member websites can be managed by anyone – no technical background needed -- and have a variety of features, all at a very competitive price. Artspan is exceptional among online artist communities and providers of template artist websites, in offering artists the best of both worlds: Member artists benefit from being part of a searchable, high-traffic community while maintaining the autonomy of their own URL. Members can also access a wealth of marketing information and, in an age of limited or non-existent customer service, the Artspan Help Desk can be reached by phone or email.
"Throughout history, artists have been dependent on dealers and galleries; now they can do their own marketing. It’s a very empowering thing, and it levels the playing field." - Eric Sparre, Managing Director of Artspan, The Wall Street Journal, 6/16/08
