Five Artspan Members Honored in B&W+Color Magazine

Talented Artspan member photographers took multiple prizes in the 2012 Single Image Contest, featured in B&W+Color’s April issue.

The strong showing of our membership in this contest demonstrates the amazing depth and variation of talent represented on Artspan.

In its April, 2012 issue B&W+Color magazine has announced the winners of its annual Single Image Contest for photography, and five members of Artspan have taken awards: Stephen Bitel (East Norwich, NY), Allan R. Lamb (Yuba City, CA), Milicska Jalbert (Montreal, Quebec), Mary Phipps-Seward (Conshohocken, PA), Haydee Yordan (San Juan, Puerto Rico). About the Winners
Stephen Bitel ( is the winner of a Gold Award in Architecture/Interiors; and three Merit Awards, in Photojournalism Documentary, Metaphor/Abstract, and Travel/People/Places. Stephen’s photographic work has covered a wide range of subjects, including advertising and photojournalism, but he takes particular interest in using lighting and composition to transform the abstracted colors, textures, and reflections of everyday elements.

Milicska Jalbert ( is a winner of a Merit Award in Landscape/Nature. Intuitive and spontaneous, Milicska allows herself to be guided by the spirit of the moment with her photography. She has a special penchant for nature: “The beauty of its games of light, the geometry of its forms, and the music of its colors provide inexhaustible sources of inspiration.”

Allan R. Lamb ( is the winner of a Silver Award for Still Life/Objects; and three Merit Awards, in Landscape/Nature, Digital Manipulation, and Nudes/Body. He has been a photographer for over 45 years and has travelled throughout Europe, United States Dominican Republic, Panama, and Korea. He has actively studied historic photographic processes and cameras in Europe and the United States, and has written articles on photography published here and in Europe for the book Framing Photography, now in its fourth edition.

Mary Phipps-Seward ( is a winner of a merit award in Digital Manipulation. Mary, graduate of Moore College of Art and Design, describes her work as having “a very graphic "Stop! Look at me!" quality. I speak out with vibrant, saturated color in an effort to bring attention and appreciation to "everyday" visual delights.”

Haydee Yordan ( is the winner of a Silver Award for Metaphor/Abstract. In Haydee’s words, “I look inquisitively into uncommon spaces to discover the art of nature that we sometimes don't see, like the magic of sand formations, the dance of water in the seashore, water reflections and details of tree bark. I feel a need to go into the intimacy of nature with the objective of showing you valuable discoveries.”
