Adoption of home energy management products and services has accelerated over the past year enabled by cloud service platforms, wireless sensor networks and widespread use of smartphones, according to global technology research firm ON World. By 2016, global revenues for home energy management systems and services will reach $4.3 billion.
Home energy management has emerged as one of the fastest growing Smart Home markets with the most traction currently in the telecom, cable/broadband, security services and retail segments. Since ON World’s last report in 2010, home energy systems and services have emerged in multiple channels and are deployed in many Home Area Network (HAN) architectures.
“Integrated HAN solutions, multi-purpose smart energy devices, and intelligent cloud services are the major ways companies are differentiating their offerings today,” says Mareca Hatler, ON World’s research director.
ON World’s patent evaluation found over 100 recently filed applications on smart energy devices, home energy controllers and cloud-based energy solutions that use contextual awareness and advanced data analytics. Recent offerings include Allure Energy’s proximity sensing thermostat that also streams music; Nest Labs’ Learning Thermostat that features MEMS sensors, WiFi and ZigBee; and AT&T’s hosted Smart Home services platform.
Consolidation of the home energy value chain is underway. AlertMe has acquired Wattbox, Tendril of GroundedPower, Google of Motorola/4Home and AT&T of Xanboo. A few of the latest strategic alliances include AlertMe with Lowe’s; EcoFactor with Comcast; EnergyHub with Honeywell and Radio Thermostat; and Tendril with Siemens and Vivint.
ON World’s survey with retail companies such as Best Buy, Home Depot and Lowe’s found that sales for energy management systems are accelerating and cloud based home monitoring services is a growing trend. Networking innovations, ZigBee Smart Energy 2.0, OpenADR, and data privacy and security standards are increasing opportunities for Smart Grid integration.
