We find this to be particularly the case in the healthcare and the technology sectors where quite often the employer is either directly or indirectly under a government contract where certain background check compliance standards are mandated.

Basichis pointed out that once upon a time many employers took foreign educated employees more or less at their word and didn’t bother checking to see if their claimed degrees were valid. There was once a general naïve assumption that what a candidate claimed was beyond reproach. But since then many international employees were discovered to be less than forthcoming with their degrees. Like their American counterparts, a fair share of international students were only enrolled at the college or university and never graduated. Or they didn’t attend at all. That combined with the prevalence of hundreds of diploma mills, where bogus and unaccredited universities are established virtually in name only provide diplomas for nominal fees based on “life experience” or a rudimentary test.

“International education verification can be a difficult process,” said Basichis. “Sometimes it’s necessary to first contact the university, then the college within the university, then the department within the college, in order to confirm graduation. And, contrary to common conception, not everyone in this world speaks English. So it is necessary when possible to work with researchers who can speak a variety of languages.
