The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS®) has announced the six finalist organizations that will compete for the 40th anniversary of the Franz Edelman Award 2012. The Franz Edelman Award is a prize for Achievement in Operations Research and the Management Sciences, and will be awarded in Huntington Beach CA, in April of this year.
Joint supply chain optimization efforts of TNT Express, ORTEC and Tilburg University have been officially recognized by INFORMS®. TNT Express has been shortlisted as a finalist at the 2012 Franz Edelman Award for its successful application of Operations Research in supply chain optimization through TNT’s Global Optimization Program “GO.” The use of Operations Research, applied mathematics for decision making, for analysis and enhancement of its transportation networks has not only allowed TNT Express to tremendously save on costs, but to also improve customer service and manager skill development on a global scale.
TNT Optimizes Entire Supply Chain with ORTEC
In 2005, TNT Express began using ORTEC’s mathematical techniques to optimize its domestic line haul network in Italy. Today, TNT Express utilizes Operations Research to support decision making on all aspects of its operations, including site location, truck routing and scheduling, fleet management and workforce scheduling. TNT Express, supported by ORTEC’s modeling capabilities and solutions, has achieved a reduction of 60 Million truck-kilometers and 54 million kg of CO2 emissions by optimizing its domestic networks in Germany, France, Spain, Italy and China alone.
"We take great pride in this nomination because the award is seen as the most prestigious and coveted prize in the world of Operations Research,” said John Poppelaars, Director of the ORTEC Consulting Group. “It is the second time ORTEC and one of our customers are being nominated for the award, as in 2007 Coca-Cola Enterprises and ORTEC were nominated for the results of their joint Operations Research activities which resulted in $45 Million savings annually for the multinational enterprise. So we are especially proud of this achievement."
