On January 30th, the New York Times reported on non-specialists performing plastic surgery procedures and quoted local Scottsdale plastic surgeon, Patti Flint MD. As a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, she has seen a surge in patients requesting revisionary surgery.

In the article, Kate Murphy discusses a patient’s personal experience consulting with a doctor who was board certified, but not in plastic surgery for a face-lift and tummy tuck surgery. Her impression of the doctor was that he was certified to perform cosmetic procedures but the doctor was in fact a specialist in otolaryngology - ear, nose, and throat surgery. Although he could legally perform a plastic surgery procedure, he had not been trained or board certified in the field. There is no law in the US that states you must only practice inside your field.

The article also cites that 80 percent of licensed doctors pursue a specialty in a chosen concentration.

Each board certification requires a minimum of a three-year residency in addition to oral and written examinations overseen by one of 24 boards.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery is a certifying organization.

It also requires a surgeon to participate in continuing education and re-certification every ten years.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has been actively involved in improving prospective patient education. As a plastic surgeon in Scottsdale, Patti Flint MD was Board Certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1999 and in 2009 had her re-certification. In her Scottsdale plastic surgery practice, she has performed many operations to correct damage caused by procedures performed by medical practitioners whom are not board certified in plastic surgery.

Dr. Flint has been practicing in the Metro Phoenix area for over 15 years, providing a unique perspective as a female surgeon. Her practice is based on the philosophy that results should look and feel as natural as possible.
