CYA Technologies, an enChoice® company, today announced CYA HOTBackup™, seamlessly integrating with Symantec NetBackup to support hot backup of an EMC Documentum enterprise content management system (ECM). With the release of CYA HOTBackup 2.0, it reduces planned and unplanned downtime for EMC Documentum customers providing full protection in case of system failures, thereby minimizing business interruptions.

Mission critical applications such as legal, compliance, insurance and finance cannot afford downtime to their ECM applications; they require 24x7 availability of information for their worldwide users. CYA HOTBackup is an application aware solution that enables companies to mitigate and even eliminate planned EMC Documentum downtime by performing consistent hot backups of the entire application and repositories (Docbases) that house all the business processes and content without any downtime. This "hot backup" capability allows backups to be created without affecting ongoing business operations, improving availability, reducing risk and insuring data integrity.

"Companies need to protect their business-critical applications but what customers do not want is to have to protect these applications with multiple point solutions. They want simple, easy protection that also allows them to gain greater storage efficiency and shorter development cycles for their business process management applications,” said Simon Jelley, senior director, Information Management Group, Symantec. “By leveraging CYA HOTBackup solution, integrated with Symantec NetBackup, organizations can experience greater efficiencies by managing data protection from a single platform, removing key obstacles around 24x7 availability while simultaneously managing cost and complexity."

Backing up repository content and the database consistently (at the same time) is critical to ensuring that ECM information is not corrupt or inaccessible upon recovery. Most solutions can’t ensure a consistent backup unless EMC Documentum is brought offline because of the continual interaction of the database and the content repository. CYA HOTBackup, however, can perform a consistent hot backup while Documentum remains online, increasing user productivity and enabling companies to achieve high availability. CYA HOTBackup consistently backs up all Documentum components including:

  •     The full-text index;
  •     Database; and
  •     Storage area.

“We developed CYA HOTBackup in response to requests from multiple EMC Documentum customers that wanted hot, consistent backup capabilities without having to add another backup solution or replace their Symantec NetBackup environment,” said Mike Fernandes, director of product management and services for CYA Technologies. “With over 65% of the EMC Documentum installed base using Symantec NetBackup, we are delivering a solution that when installed easily integrates with Symantec NetBackup and provides Documentum-specific hot backup functionality”

CYA HOTBackup is available for Documentum 6.x, and is designed to complement CYA’s flagship product, CYA SmartRecovery™. CYA SmartRecovery mitigates unplanned Documentum downtime by enabling hot, granular recovery of EMC Documentum objects in response to logical failures such as viruses, power surges, and user/programmatic errors.
