Denture Cream Zinc Poisoning
Many denture creams contain zinc, which acts as a bonding agent. Unfortunately, until very recently, most denture cream manufacturers failed to include a warning on the box or label informing consumers of the potential risk of zinc poisoning. In August 2008, the journal "Neurology" reported on four patients suffering from neuropathy and other neurological symptoms typical of zinc poisoning and copper deficiency. All of the patients were frequent users of denture cream and had high zinc blood levels along with copper deficiency. It was determined that excess use of zinc-containing dental creams could have been responsible for their symptoms. [neurology.org/content/71/9/639.full?sid=03590a7a-4d6d-4cf1-b0d5-d312cabae54e]
In 2010, GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of Super PoliGrip denture cream, announced it was removing zinc from three of its products, citing reports of neurological injuries possibly associated with excessive exposure to zinc in the denture creams. Around the same time, Procter & Gamble, the maker of Fixodent denture creams, altered the labels for those products to include a caution about overuse of denture cream. Fixodent products, however, are still made with zinc. [mypolicare.com/Poligrip_FAQ.aspx; dentureliving.com/fixodent-denture-products/how-to-use-fixodent-denture-adhesive]
In a February 2011, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) sent a letter to denture cream makers recommending that they take actions to mitigate the risks of zinc poisoning, including possibly replacing zinc with a safer ingredient. To date, Procter & Gamble continues to manufacture Fixodent denture cream products with zinc. Alonso Krangle LLP believes that Fixodent denture creams with zinc constitute a serious public health threat, and calls on Procter & Gamble to remove its zinc-containing denture adhesives from the market, and reformulate Fixodent products so they are zinc free. Denture Cream Zinc Poisoning Lawsuits
The manufacturers of zinc-containing denture creams, including Procter & Gamble, have been named in numerous lawsuits alleging Fixodent and similar products caused users to suffer severe and disabling neurological injuries. In addition to the federal Denture Cream Products Liability Litigation currently underway in the Southern District of Florida, denture cream zinc poisoning lawsuits have been consolidated in a state mass tort action in the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. That litigation, entitled In re Denture Adhesive Cream Mass Tort Program, June Term, 2009, No. 4534, is assigned to the Honorable Judge Sandra Mazer Moss. The first trial in the Pennsylvania denture cream mass tort is scheduled to begin in May.
