Newport History Tours (NHT), a collaboration between the Newport Historical Society and the Newport Restoration Foundation, is pleased to announce the schedule for the 2012 tour season. NHT will continue to offer daily tours that focus on Newport’s early history along with several themed tours offered on a limited basis.
The 2012 schedule includes two flagship tours, the popular Discover Colonial Newport tour and the new tour From Golden to Gilded, which provide a foundation for introducing Newport’s history to visitors. Five themed tours that cover specific aspects of Newport’s history are offered on a weekly basis during the height of the season.
The season’s schedule is as follows:
Discover Colonial Newport: Hear stories of revolution and ruin, struggles for religious diversity during Newport’s colonial period. Offered at 10:30am Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from June 19th through October 30th; offered on Saturdays and Sundays from April through June 17th and in November.
From Golden to Gilded: From Newport’s colonial Golden Age to Gilded Age summer colony, discover the transformation of the city and its people. Offered at 10:30am Monday, Wednesday and Friday from June 18th through October 31st.
Rogues & Scoundrels: Riots and Rebellion, enemies and allies! Learn about Newport’s role in the American Revolution. Offered at 11am on Thursdays from June 21st through October 25th.
Working Waterfront: Walk in the footsteps of the immigrants, sailors and merchants who once lived and worked in the Lower Thames neighborhood on this multisensory tour. Departs from Whitehorne House Museum, 416 Thames Street. Offered at 11am on Fridays from June 22nd through October 26th.
Souls & Stones: Explore the Common Burying Ground and its gravestones. Learn about the carvers, their art and the diverse people buried there who helped shape Newport’s history. Offered at 11am on Sundays from June 24th through October 28th.
Holiday Lantern Tour: Learn the history of 18th century winter holiday traditions on a lantern-lit stroll through Newport’s streets. Hear about people did or didn’t celebrate the holidays. Offered at 4:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays from November 16th through December 1st; offered on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from December 6th through December 29th.
Tickets cost $12 per person, $10 for Newport Historical Society members, and $5 for children ages twelve and under. Tours depart from the Museum & Shop at Brick Market, 127 Thames Street, Newport, RI, unless otherwise noted. Tours last approximately 75 minutes and are weather permitting.
