AvMed Health Plans has partnered with longtime client, Miami-Dade County (MDC), to launch a “Know Your Numbers” wellness campaign. The program is open to all 27,000 Miami Dade County employees and aims to improve their individual health through a series of health screenings.
“We work closely with clients to understand their needs and create a solution that works for their employees and effectively controls health care costs, setting a course for a sustainable, healthy future, “said James M. Repp, AvMed Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing.”
Measurements such as body mass index (BMI), cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose levels are the four key indicators for major illness. If employees know these numbers, they can take action to reduce their chances of developing heart disease, diabetes, and other major chronic diseases.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chronic diseases – such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes – are among the most prevalent, costly, and preventable of all health problems. Access to high-quality and affordable prevention measures (including screening and appropriate follow-up) are essential steps in saving lives, reducing disabilities, and lowering costs for medical care.
To get employees engaged, the MDC program will use a “health tracker card” to monitor their progress. Employees will participate in spring and fall health screenings as well as attend one additional onsite health seminar or activity hosted by AvMed and Miami-Dade County. The health screenings will include: Blood Pressure, Total Cholesterol, Glucose, and BMI. The fall screening will gauge any progress and improvements. Participating employees will be entered into drawings for rewards and prizes upon completion.
“We believe the more employees know, the better equipped they will be to stay healthy and productive,” says Repp. “We are pleased to offer this wellness program to Miami-Dade County. We’re confident this effort will enhance employees’ well-being and quality of life, propelling them forward on a road to better health. Additionally, research proves that employers who embrace wellness programs will see savings through reduced absenteeism, hospital admissions and sick days.”
“We are excited about this program and hope that it will enable employees to make educated decisions about their health care options,” said Mary Lou Rizzo, Assistant Director of Internal Services Department, Miami-Dade County.
