COIT, a leading supplier of specialty cleaning and disaster restoration services headquartered in San Francisco, is marking National Flood Safety Awareness Week (March 12-16) by urging businesses to prepare for natural disasters and other water related emergencies in advance.
“Businesses stand to lose a great deal when natural disasters or building emergencies strike,” Bob Kearn, President and CEO of COIT, said. “By lining up a disaster restoration partner in advance who can assist with mitigation and restoration, business owners stand the best chance of minimizing the financial impact of any losses.”
According to NOAA’s National Weather Service, flooding is a coast-to-coast threat to the United States and its territories throughout the year. In recent years, a number of regions across the country have experienced extensive flooding during the spring months.
“You think it’s never going to be you, but it’s devastating when it happens,” Larry Weinberg, General Manager of Superior Cleaning and Restoration, a COIT Services company, said. “Before it does happen you want to do your homework – figure out who you’re going to hire and get it locked up in advance.”

In many cases water damage can be devastating, Weinberg notes, even when it is caused by a burst pipe instead of a flood. On November 3, 2011 falling wet ceiling panels caused a motion detector to sound an alarm in the basement bank vault of a large Business Center in Downtown Seattle. A burst pipe in a bathroom 32 stories above had leaked all the way to the basement, causing extensive damage. Weinberg’s office received a call for help at 2 a.m. and dispatched a crew of workers along with a project management team.
“When a pipe breaks like that in a downtown office building, frankly it is chaos,” Weinberg said. “You’ve got tenants, facility people, risk managers, everyone running around. The key for us is to start with the basics – extracting the water. Once the damage has been mitigated, the process of dealing with insurance and restoration can begin.” Ten days later, as the Business Center job was being completed, property managers from throughout Seattle toured the site to learn how a large loss could be handled effectively.
Weinberg notes that business owners to check with their insurance brokers to be sure they are covered for natural flooding as well as other emergencies. In the case of flooding, when numerous businesses and residents are scrambling for assistance from limited vendors, advance preparation is helps. COIT’s “Prepare Now” Planned Response Program assists businesses that sustain water, fire, smoke, mold, or wind damage.
