A new iPad app works with article databases to create a browsable newsstand of complete journals.

Third Iron, LLC, a leading library technology company, announced today the beta release of BrowZine: Open Access Edition, a new app for the iPad. BrowZine combines articles from databases to create full journals, organizes them on shelves arranged by subject, and delivers a reading experience optimized for the iPad. With BrowZine, users can easily find journals made available by their library and Open Access sources, browse titles of interest, and read individual articles or the complete journal.

“Most journals, whether from paid subscriptions or Open Access sources, are packaged together and delivered in a database format designed to support searching across journals, not reading of individual titles,” notes Karl Becker, CTO. “While searching is an important part of the research process, scanning titles published in their field is a key way researchers stay current with trends and topics. In recombining database content to deliver full journals specially formatted for the iPad, BrowZine uniquely meets this need.”

The initial beta release of BrowZine contains a growing list of Open Access journals with future plans to include other content sources. “We see the beta release of BrowZine as an important step in helping libraries promote and connect researchers with Open Access journals,” says Jill Blaemers, Director of Publisher Relations.

BrowZine: Open Access Edition (Beta) is available at no charge and may now be downloaded from the Apple App Store at Users may register their library to take advantage of current and forthcoming customization features.
