TrekDesk Treadmill Desks may offer relief to the millions of people prone to obesity due to their genetics according to new research presented today at the American Heart Association conference in San Diego.
Researchers from Harvard University reported that regular walking may help decrease the impact of obesity genes by as much as 50%. Analyzing data from 12,000 men and women the researchers looked at 32 known variants of the FTO gene known to impact obesity. The study revealed that half of the participants had a greater risk of obesity due to genetic factors. Each additional FTO gene variant was associated with a 0.13-unit increase in Body Mass Index. That translates to a one unit gain in BMI for an individual with 7-8 variants of the obesity gene, more than statistically significant.
The impact of these obesity gene variants was greater among sedentary individuals however. Participants who watched 40 hours or more of television per week had a four fold greater impact from these variants than those that only watched an hour per week or less. The good news is that lessening the effect of the genes is as easy as going for a walk. An hour walk each day was shown to decrease the obesity genes effect by 50%, even among the most sedentary study participants.
“The challenge in today’s society is finding time to incorporate movement,” stated Steve Bordley, CEO of TrekDesk Treadmill Desks. “TrekDesk allows employees the opportunity to reverse the effect of these obesity gene variants by allowing continual movement throughout the day.”
