Texas CPA Firms Claim Spots on Accounting Today Top 100

Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants announces that twelve firms earn top honors in Southwest region

CPA firms continued to perform well among the nation’s elite in the recently released Accounting Today Top 100 Firms of 2012. Two Fort Worth firms, Weaver and Whitley Penn, claimed 45th and 78th, respectively. For the second consecutive year, both firms also ranked first and second in a list of the top 10 Southwest firms.

Weaver, the largest firm in the Southwest with nearly 400 employees in six offices, took the region’s top honor with more than $66 million in revenue last year, a 1.68 percent increase from a year ago.

The firm continued its growth trend as it merged with Houston firm L.T. Hawthorne & Associates in January. In July, it merged with the office of Killman, Murrell & Company in Midland, Texas. The firm expanded its energy credit brokering services in September and in January, merged with San Antonio-based John R. Hannah & Company.

Whitley Penn also had a stellar 2011. With more than 180 total employees in two offices, the firm boasted $37.5 million in revenue, up nearly 17 percent from a year ago. The firm expanded its services in audit, tax and litigation support/business valuation. It also announced, in September, a move to a new office in Dallas. As in 2010, Whitley Penn was named an Accounting Today Best Firm to Work for in 2011.

Among the other top firms in the Southwest were Padgett, Stratemann & Co. of San Antonio; Gainer, Donnelly & Desroches of Houston; PKF Texas of Houston; Briggs & Vaselka of Houston; Travis Wolff of Dallas; Cain Watters & Associates of Dallas; Lane Gorman Trubitt of Dallas; Johnson Miller & Company of Odessa, Texas; PMB Helin Donovan of Austin and MaloneBailey of Houston.
