St. Elizabeth Health Center has received a silver “Healthy Hospital Award” from Stryker Sustainability Solutions.

The award recognizes “outstanding performance in reducing environmental harm and improving overall hospital quality through medical device remanufacturing and reprocessing” in 2011.

Through its medical device remanufacturing and reprocessing practices, St. Elizabeth Health Center saved $175,055 last year and prevented 9,788 pounds of materials from entering the waste stream.

In 2010, Humility of Mary Health Partners received a silver “Healthy Hospital Award” from Ascent, a Stryker Sustainability Solution. That award acknowledged HMHP’s three health centers – St. Elizabeth Health Center, St. Joseph Health Center in Warren, and St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center – for collectively saving $176,647 and preventing 12,005 pounds of waste as a result of remanufacturing and reprocessing medical devices.

Before implementing the reprocessing program, medical supplies such as compression sleeves, external fixation devices, EP catheters and cables, and endoscopic trocars were discarded after every use.
