High street bakery chain Greggs is on a recruitment roll, announcing plans to create 800 more jobs in 2012.
The company – which already operates 1,572 bakeries throughout the UK – plans to open 90 new stores in the UK this year, in addition to the 98 it opened in 2011. The new stores and the general company expansion will require 800 new staff to be recruited. The recruitment process is likely to make use of online recruitment facilities.
A major route of expansion will be the launch of new Greggs Moment coffee bars, which have proved to be very popular so far. Last year the company sold more than 17.3 million coffees.
The company’s chief executive, Ken McMeikan, said that the company experience a 1 per cent rise in profits last year, which registered at £53 million. The company has had a slow start to 2012 – with takings falling by 1.8 per cent – but McMeikan said that he was pleased with the company’s status.
“Greggs performed well in 2011 in what was a very challenging time for both the economy and the consumer,” he said.
McMeikan added that the company’s 20,000 staff would all benefit from a £5.9 million rewards scheme this year.
