Trucking Acquisitions

Fulfilling the strategic growth needs of our clients, whether big or small is always a top priority for our firm and we’ll continue to meet those needs just as we have for the last twenty-five years

Ahern and Associates, Ltd., North America’s premier trucking and logistics acquisition specialists have recently aided three additional clients in acquisitions of regional trucking and logistics companies as part of their strategic expansion plans. These clients of Ahern had a desire to expand their company’s footprint while growing their driver base and increasing their pool of customers—a common theme resonating throughout the transportation industry in 2012.

Andy Ahern, CEO of Ahern and Associates is often known for garnering national attention as a result of being involved in some of the industry’s largest transactions involving companies such as Sargent Trucking Company, Inc., Cargo Masters, Inc., and George Transfer, Inc. However, it’s important to note that his staff of skilled advisors often works niche deals for customers who are seeking specific “tuck-ins” which involve smaller trucking and logistics companies to enhance their position in the marketplace.

Ahern has noted that he sees a trend in the transportation industry from his broad base of clients who are looking for acquisitions to provide two primary functions: acquire quality drivers and tap into new customer bases.

Often times, Ahern’s clients will seek regional acquisitions in order to saturate a new market for potential drivers or purchase a small trucking company that has a good base of drivers because the area has the potential to attract drivers that they have not been able to access in their current market. In other instances, the client is looking to obtain a specific customer, and by purchasing a small trucking company they are able to offer that specific customer more capacity with certain commitments.

A successful case study of this strategy was actualized by NYK Logistics, which is a $26 billion overseas firm, who engaged Ahern’s services to locate a customs broker, which Ahern did. The theory behind the acquisition strategy was to take a small $10MM revenue business base company and develop the base and package it all into NYK’s overall logistics network.
In many instances, Ahern and Associates helps to define their customer’s needs by providing an analysis of their existing business model. When the analysis is completed, both the client and Ahern recognize that there are certain areas that could use improvement; whether it’s a geographic footprint, an opportunity to fill backhaul freight at a much higher rate and/or the potential to acquire a business that offers customer and driver opportunity.

“Fulfilling the strategic growth needs of our clients, whether big or small is always a top priority for our firm and we’ll continue to meet those needs just as we have for the last twenty-five years,” explained Ahern.
