Self-published author RM Jarmain displays his literary prowess in a collection of short stories released through Xlibris. Titled Voices in the Mind, this book features a miscellany of stories on a wide diversity of themes, some of which tap tentatively into the realm of the metaphysical universe.

In his titular piece, the author explores a variation on the theme of mental telepathy. Deaf as a consequence of injuries sustained in a street accident, Barry Harker's affliction is something of a medical rarity amongst cases such as his. His hearing can be restored to virtual normality through the use of an ordinary hearing aid. When the device is accidentally damaged, Barry arranges a swop with an enigmatic visitor to his town and finds himself possessed of the power to “listen in” to the thoughts of others and to project his own thoughts into the minds of others. He little realizes that mental suggestion is a power to be wielded only with much discipline and a great deal of restraint. This story opens the first half of the book – an assortment of widely disparate tales, each representing a separate “voice” in the mind of the author.

The second half of the book is taken up entirely by the novella Then there was Harvey. This is a saga about a rather wicked but ultimately lovable schoolboy who finds himself possessed of a unique kind of power. Soon, he discovers that this power enables him to inflict a rare and potentially deadly form of torture upon the forces of authority at his alma mater.

Voices in the Mind invites readers to find humour, drama, suspense, irony, and moments of almost heartrending pathos.

This book will be featured at the 2012 London Book Fair in London, England, on April 16-18, 2012. It is enrolled in Xlibris’ Bookstore Returnability Program, which gives booksellers the convenient option of returning excess stocks through Ingram Distribution. About the Author
RM “Rusty” Jarmain is a retired forester who abandoned the trees in answer to the call of the world-famous surf of Jeffreys Bay on the South-Eastern coast of South Africa. The only actual surfing that he does, however, is on the monitor screen of his desktop computer, which he also uses to play Freecell and Spider Solitaire and to compose the odd short story, article, or snippet of poetry – mostly in light-hearted vein but now and then really quite serious. Voices in the Mind is his first venture into the realm of authorship and brings to culmination a dream that was born at the age of seven, upon being awarded a big red star for his first attempt at creative writing.
