How do public policies, government decisions and management structures affect socioeconomic conditions and people’s lives? Students earning the new Public Administration bachelor’s degree from Southern New Hampshire University learn the answers to this question and about how civil servants can effect change in society.
The new online Public Administration bachelor’s degree program at SNHU focuses not only on government structure and management skills, but also on the community and social aspects of public administration and policy. This broadened focus prepares students for a variety of careers. Graduates might pursue positions in government at the municipal, county, state, federal or international levels, as well as at nonprofit and quasi-governmental organizations.
As they complete course work for the online Public Administration bachelor’s degree, students will acquire an applied and comprehensive knowledge of the structure, responsibilities and opportunities of public administration in a variety of community settings. They will understand administrative management, fiscal budgeting, community dynamics, politics and public policy.
“The BA in Public Administration is really about learning how working in government and nonprofit systems can be a driver, facilitator and creator of meaningful change,” says Dr. Melissa Nemon, associate dean of Community Economic Development at SNHU. “From empowering others to be engaged in their local government or developing and enforcing public policy, to creating systems and programs on a national or global scale or improving social conditions, students in the program learn how to work within the existing power systems to foster meaningful, sustainable change.”
The online Public Administration bachelor’s degree program develops students’ skills in analyzing, assessing and addressing social, economic and development issues within a public administration framework. They will learn to recognize and define public sector departments, delivery systems, management hierarchy and organizational behaviors. They also will become adept at understanding the elements of public budgets and sound fiscal management.
“The hope is that when students graduate from Southern New Hampshire University with a Public Administration bachelor’s degree, they will not only be a great candidate for a public administration job, but also will have a broader scope of the social, economic and development issues that impact our world,” Nemon said.
