10Rate reviewers and staff selected 10 of the best Over the Range Microwaves for 2012, assigning each a numerical rating as well as awarding three models that stood out for quality, value and budget. Ease of use was the primary feature judged when giving consideration to this Over the Range Microwaves Top 10 list, as well as versatility and range of settings. Other testing and consideration were given based on the following factors:
1. Size and appearance
2. Cooking time
3. Quality construction
4. Heating performance
The annual Over the Range Microwave Reviews awards list most prominently featured the GE PVM1790SRSS, which took the Best Value spot and a 9 out of 10 rating. The review noted several strengths of the microwave as follows: “With a convex black viewing window that spans the entire width of the face, it’s a gleaming, sharp-looking model that looks handsome sitting over a matching range. The stainless steel interior not only looks stylish, but it’s easier to clean. With 1,550 convection watts, the microwave effectively browns food, adding a delicious crispiness to favorites like pizza.”
10rate's editors also gave the Best Quality Over the Range Microwave award to another model of same brand, the GE JVM1750DP. With a rating of 8.5 out of 10, this GE Microwave Review boasted that it has “the option to set our own defrosting time or let the machine calculate the best time and power level to thaw food quickly.” The review went on to mention, “Other useful features are the stoppable turntable, two positions for the cooking rack, and four sound volume choices. One-touch buttons simplify the cooking process, with instant 1-to-6 minute buttons and automatic sensors for popular food choices. Aesthetically, it’s an attractive piece with your basic control panel.”
Additionally, the Best Budget award from the Top 10 Best Over-the-Range Microwaves 2012 went to the Whirlpool WMH2175XVT for which 10rate noted, “Clever little illustrations on the buttons dress up this Whirlpool over-the-range microwave, offsetting its otherwise simple, clean design. The recessed turntable adds extra space to the already roomy cavity. The glass turntable comes with an on/off option, too.” As for price, the review also concluded, “For only $155, this Whirlpool model is a great purchase for people who appreciate steady performance and convenient factors in their kitchen appliances.”
Along with GE, Samsung was also featured for two models in the Comparison Over the Range Microwave Ratings. Winning the first place in overall ranking, the Samsung Over the Range Microwaves Review had this to say of the Samsung SMH1816S: “The gleaming exterior looks as sleek as a TV screen, with a bright fluorescent display and wide viewing window. This model has no shortage of convenient cooking presets, including popular kids’ choices, popcorn, pizza, frozen vegetables, eco mode, and even customizable settings. … With such a great capacity and high quality cooking performance, this Samsung model delivers a lot of bang for its buck ($273.26, to be exact).”
