IMCA Hires Director of Education - Jim Dobbs Joins Association Staff After Six-year Consulting Role

Investment Management Consultants Association® (IMCA®) today announced that Jim Dobbs, 44, has joined the association as director of education. In this position, he will develop and improve in-person and online learning products and platforms that support the education component of IMCA’s mission. Prior to joining IMCA’s staff this week, he served as a certification consultant and program director for IMCA’s Certified Private Wealth Advisor® (CPWA®) certification program for approximately six years.

Investment Management Consultants Association® (IMCA®) today announced that Jim Dobbs, 44, has joined the association as director of education. In this position, he will develop and improve in-person and online learning products and platforms that support the education component of IMCA’s mission. Dobbs will oversee content development and implementation, delivering courses and curricula related to IMCA’s certifications and continuing education requirements. Prior to joining IMCA’s staff this week, he served as a certification consultant and program director for IMCA’s Certified Private Wealth Advisor® (CPWA®) certification program for approximately six years.

Dobbs has worked in the financial services arena as a consultant and educator for more than 20 years, with and for private clients, corporations, membership associations, regulatory organizations, and academic institutions. He founded and managed the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board) registered financial planning certificate programs at The University of Texas at Austin and Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Dobbs also worked as director of education for the CFP Board. He founded Dobbs Wealth, a fee-only financial planning and investment advisory practice serving private clients, and worked for several financial services firms, including Mercer, Citigroup, Ameriprise Financial, and the investment banking firm Sanders Morris Harris.

Dobbs earned the Certified Financial Planner™ certification in 1996, and a bachelor’s of business administration degree in financial planning from Baylor's Hankamer School of Business in 1991. He earned a post-baccalaureate award in taxation with honor from UCLA Extension and completed the management development for entrepreneurs program at UCLA’s Anderson School of Business. He played collegiate and professional baseball and appeared in a national television commercial with baseball legend Nolan Ryan.

Since 1988, IMCA has offered the CIMA® certification, which earned accreditation by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in April 2011, making it the first financial services credential in the United States to meet international standards (ISO 17024) for personnel certification. CIMA certification is designed for advanced investment advisors and consultants, and the CPWA® certification is suited for wealth management professionals working with high-net-worth clients.
