Bel Marra Health comments on recent studies that suggest overweight women are at higher risk of breast cancer recurrence

The idea that weight plays a role in breast cancer survival is interesting, but there are undoubtedly many health reasons why overweight women should try and get back to a normal weight.

Bel Marra Health, well known for offering high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, has commented on a recent study that suggests overweight women are at a higher risk of breast cancer recurrence than slim women.

A study released today at the 8th European Breast Cancer Conference has said that when it came to breast cancer recurrence (after body mass index was considered) it was concluded that 1.2 percent of the patients were underweight, 32.6 percent were of normal weight, 32.9 percent were overweight, and 33.3 percent were obese.

Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School Dr. Jennifer Ligibel says the results are very interesting. She comments, "obesity is a modifiable factor, and although there is not yet enough evidence to say with certainty that losing weight or exercising more regularly will decrease the risk of breast cancer recurrence, there are consistent links between lifestyle factors such as diet, weight and physical activity patterns and breast cancer prognosis.”

Dr. Victor Marchione, spokesperson for Bel Marra Health and expert in Pulmonary Medicine says, “the idea that weight plays a role in breast cancer survival is interesting, but there are undoubtedly many health reasons why overweight women should try and get back to a normal weight, so addressing this immediate problem becomes the most important factor when considering this research”.

Studies have been showing a link between obesity and the development of breast cancer for many years, but there has been less research to date looking at its effect on breast cancer recurrence and, in specific, survival rates.
