Timothy Maloney, Jay Holland, Walter Laake, Brian Markovitz and Debora Fajer-Smith of Joseph, Greenwald and Laake, PA (“http://www.jgllaw.com”) were selected as Local Litigation Stars in Benchmark’s 2012 publication. According to the publication, “Benchmark is the only publication on the market to focus exclusively on litigation in the US. The guide’s results are the culmination of a six-month research period that allows our researchers to conduct extensive interviews with litigators and their clients. During these interviews we examine recent casework handled by the firms and ask sources to offer their professional opinions on litigators practicing within their state or national practice areas.”

Benchmark’s review of the firm praises the experience and breadth of practice at Joseph, Greenwald & Laake, noting “The firm’s constitutional and civil rights group [led by partner Timothy Maloney], recently obtained the largest jury verdict ever awarded against the Prince George’s County police for the violation of a citizen’s civil rights. In March of 2011, a jury awarded an $11.5 million verdict as a result of a county police officer shooting a citizen to death while off-duty.”

The firm’s qui tam/whistleblower practice was also lauded by Benchmark: “In a whistleblower’s lawsuit, Jay Holland and Brian Markovitz helped secure a $600 million settlement and guilty plea from Allergan for the off-label marketing of Botox. Their client, the whistleblower, revealed to federal authorities that the company was urging doctors to prescribe Botox for uses not approved by the FDA in direct violation of federal law.”

Burt Kahn, the Firm’s Managing Director, commented that “he was very proud of this well-deserved recognition bestowed on our world class litigation practice, and on our firm as a whole.” Kahn stated that “this honor exemplifies what our firm has been doing successfully for over 40 years - - and that is working hard, working smart, and putting the client first.”
