Dominion Enterprises Student Hackathon Focuses On Learning, Building Facebook Apps

On March 22-23, Dominion Enterprises (DE) will welcome 8 students from 4 local colleges and universities to create new applications on the Facebook (facebook.com) platform. Hackathon participants devote two days to building apps using technology from Facebook, Heroku (heroku.com) and DE’s own diverse group of online brands.

Students were selected by faculty and administration from ECPI (http://www.ecpi.edu), Tidewater Community College (http://www.tcc.edu), Norfolk State University (http://www.nsu.edu), and William & Mary (http://www.wm.edu) to participate in the Hackathon alongside programmers, product developers, and marketing staff from DE. Teams will compete for recognition during the Hackathon in categories such as “Most Innovative” and “Most Market Ready,” while learning how to create engaging social applications.

“After organizing two successful Hackathons in 2011, we decided to reach beyond our own talent pool and engage regional schools and universities,” said Chief Information Office Joe Fuller. “Our company’s online strategy has always centered around community, and Facebook presents a huge opportunity for our advertisers to connect with consumers. We’re also excited about the chance to make a positive impact in our region by introducing students to cutting-edge technology and giving them a better sense of potential career paths available with local employers.”

Participating students will partner with more than 50 DE employees, representing market-leading brands such as For Rent (forrent.com), Homes.com (homes.com), Boats.com (boats.com), Cycle Trader (cycletrader.com), Powersports Network (powersportsnetwork.com), and The Employment Guide (employmentguide.com).
