Is New DNA Infidelity Test a Help or Hindrance to a Relationship? Dr. Bonnie Says it's Not Privacy Invasion

Some people are no longer paying for private investigators or messy divorces when they suspect infidelity, says marriage and family therapist Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil - there's something much cheaper. In an article on the Huffington Post, it's revealed that suspicious spouses can have an infidelity DNA test run on their partner for just $200 (http://huff.to/GH9fJy) Those suspecting their partner of an affair can provide an item of soiled clothing to the DNA testing company and they do the rest. Sixty percent of people who use this service are men, and about 30 percent of the time, the suspected spouse is in fact having an affair. It's a high-tech way of telling if someone's cheating.

It's a permanent memento, a high-tech way of telling if someone's cheating.

Dr. Bonnie contends, this isn't an invasion of privacy: "If the partner is innocent, they have nothing to hide so they shouldn't worry about someone taking samples from their clothing," she says. A spokesperson at the DNA testing service says the service is typically utilized as a last resort, when the person needs their suspicions confirmed. But, says Dr. Bonnie, why ask the question when you know the answer? When a couple gets to this point, she says, it's a crucial time to look at the warning signs and create a "stop sign" or boundary in order to stop the cheating.

Does your partner:

  • Excessively mention a person or colleague?
  • Stop mentioning a specific person?
  • Engage in irritable or argumentative behavior?
  • Have unexplained absences
  • Wait by the phone, or take phone with them wherever they go, even to shower? Or are they constantly texting?

Infidelity of a spouse can manifest itself in children as well, who are sensitive to the dynamics of their parents. Has your child started wetting their bed, or acting out? These unexplained occurrences can potentially point to an unfaithful partner as well.

What these warning signs will do - and why the DNA test is popular - is give the suspicious partner evidence to quell fears and suspicions about their spouse.

Dr. Bonnie mentions these warning signs in both her books, Adultery the Forgivable Sin, and Can We Cure and Forgive Adultery. They're also outlined further in the documentary, Unfaithful with the Oprah Winfrey Network and Discovery Health (http://bit.ly/GSP0KB), in which she was featured.

Whether someone reveals evidence of cheating through knowing these signs, or finds out through a DNA test, dealing with infidelity is an uphill battle.
