There is something quite inexplicable about this persistent shortage of Electronics Patent Attorneys.

The article discusses the shortage of Patent Attorneys in the Electronics field in the United Kingdom. Written by Emma van Opstal, Consultant at Fellows and Associates, it compares hands-on experience from Intellectual Property recruitment practice to data from Fellows and Associates’ recent salary survey of the UK IP profession, and highlights discrepancies.

“We have previously written about the job market, especially for Electronics attorneys, but with the new information we gathered in the survey we felt we needed to address this issue again,” explains Pete Fellows, Managing Director. “There is something quite inexplicable about this persistent shortage of Electronics Patent Attorneys, and as it turns out, the survey data does not really clarify the issue.”

Aside from providing more information, the article also explores possible underlying causes for the current shortage. “To mention just one, the many qualifications required to practice make that the Patent profession moves very slowly and has trouble adapting to a quick increase in demand,” according to Emma.

The article has received quite an interest on LinkedIn, with comments and comparisons coming in from various jurisdictions. Opinions vary – some commentators even question whether this is a real or only a perceived shortage. “The reality of the shortage is that there are jobs out there that are not getting filled,” says Emma. “This has led to increasing pressure in electronics departments all over the country. On the bright side, the shortage is forcing firms to broaden their horizons when it comes to recruitment.”
