WellBalance fitness and weight loss camps has joined the efforts to raise diabetes awareness on American Diabetes Alert Day©. WellBalance is supporting The Alert Day© by encouraging families and those within their social media network to take the Diabetes Risk Test.
WellBalance operates health camps in Cape Cod Massachusetts and northern California for adolescents, a demographic that has seen rates of diabetes increase significantly in recent years. According to one study, the prevalence of diabetes in youth increased 6-fold in a 6 year period.
“Diabetes is a real problem for the youth that we serve, particularly the onset of Type 2 diabetes, which is entirely preventable with a healthy lifestyle,” commented John Taylor, Vice President of Programs for WellBalance, “WellBalance summer fitness and weight loss camps are proud to support any effort that raises awareness and helps prevent diabetes.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that 13,000 young people are diagnosed with type I diabetes every year. While population-based numbers for adolescents are not available, the CDC estimates that 8 – 46% of all new cases of diabetes are for type 2 and that the magnitude of the issue for type 2 diabetes is likely underestimated.
“We are encouraging the thousands of customers and followers of WellBalance to take the Diabetes Risk Test,” stated Mr. Taylor, “and we ask everyone to make the necessary lifestyle changes including pursuing weight loss camps like WellBalance to prevent or lessen the risk of diabetes.”
