Until recently, the treatment options for patients with moderate to severe periodontal disease were limited. Traditional periodontal disease treatment options involved scalpels and sutures and were often invasive, painful procedures. Many patients avoided seeking treatment for their gum disease so as to avoid gum surgery and the aesthetic issues that occurred as a result. Dr. John Perna, a dentist in Oak Park, recently incorporated new technology called the LANAP Laser Treatment for gum disease does not utilize scalpels or sutures, instead using laser technology to treat periodontitis with the pain associated with traditional gum surgery.
It is not hard to understand why many patients choose to ignore their periodontal disease rather than seek treatment. Traditional periodontal gum surgery requires the dentist to cut the gums in order to thoroughly clean the root of the tooth. The gum tissue is often trimmed to remove periodontal disease before being sewn back into place. Many patients report feeling moderate to severe pain following surgery and require days off of work in order to recover. Because the gum tissue is trimmed, many times patients will have a lower gum line after surgery, which may lead to aesthetic issues as well as an increased sensitivity to hot or cold.
“Not treating gum disease because of fear is not an option,” said Dr. John Perna. “Periodontal disease has been linked to such systemic effects as heart disease, stroke, obesity, and an increased risk of low-birth-weight or premature babies. It is a serious infection in the mouth that must be treated.”
The LANAP Laser Treatment for gum disease allows Dr. Perna to treat his patient’s gum disease without cutting or sutures. This laser alternative to dental gum surgery does not use a blade, instead it zaps away the bacteria that causes periodontal disease using wavelengths of light that can tell the difference between diseased and healthy tissue. The procedure causes very little gum recession and very little discomfort for the patient. With the LANAP Laser, Dr. Perna is able to treat periodontal disease before it leads to tooth and bone loss but without the pain associated with traditional surgery. This minimally invasive procedure is the first FDA cleared laser treatment for gum disease and has been shown to provide measurable, predictable results.
